The Similes of Salt and Light. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.

Recently I shared that our family has been through a difficult season for several years, but was vague about the specifics. While I still cannot reveal all, I do have permission from one of my daughters to share one trial which has inspired this post.

Over time, we Blessed with a gift to share realized that many factors contributed to her depression, and there is no single condition, circumstance, or person to blame. Over time, we have worked together with her to deal with her depression in many helpful ways, including prayer ALWAYS, in everythingcounseling, wisdom from trusted sources, a naturopath, nutritional supplements, dietary changes, a medical doctor, and medication.

In her case, we have reason to believe that neurological issues are part of the cause, and as such, antidepressants have been a gift from God that has helped relieve her. However, we are still working to resolve the other root issues that have also contributed.

I could fill a book with all that we have tried, what has helped, and what has not, but that is not what this post is about. It is one that I believe every one of us needs to be aware of, as we are all capable of being harmed, or harming others, through it. A few months ago, during a conversation about forgiveness, D shared that several years ago, a friend made some comments that were insulting and hurtful.

While insulting and hurtful comments are in no way a rarity in our time, these particular comments were different. You see, D had already been under spiritual attack for several weeks about the significance of her life and her value as a person.

She had been wrestling these thoughts, contemplating them and weighing them in direct contrast with what she read in scripture.

Then, a friend came along and actually spoke the very words that D had been wrestling with in her own mind.

The sad result is that D received those words as a confirmation that those cruel thoughts she had been pondering must, therefore, be true. After D opened up about this situation, I prayed long and hard that night for her. In the wee hours of the following morning, long before the sun was up, God woke me up with a verse he was impressing on my heart.

I got out of bed and pulled my Bible off the shelf to find the passage. As I read, I was struck so hard by all that my Father was showing me. Here is what I wrote in my journal, almost word for word, but with a few minor edits to protect confidentiality.

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. While it seems to specifically relate to Bible teachers in a pastor or church setting, there seems to be an application for any believer who gives counsel.

And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. This is a call to be so much more careful in what we say than we could possibly imagine. Look at the ships also: So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. For your graciousness in opening my eyes to the truth of the power of the tongue, and who so often directs both my words, and the words of others — so that I may have compassion rather than anger.

But also for your graciousness that You know how hopeless we humans are in taming the tongue.Within ourselves we all have the gifts and talents we need to fulfill the purpose we've been blessed with.” ― Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free tags: blessings, drama, empowerment, gratitude, inspirational, life, motivational, purpose, simplify.
